03/10/2009 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Big 12 had seven teams finish the regular season with 20 or more wins, tying it for the most of any conference, and that should make for another exciting tournament.
Kansas, the defending national champions, went 14-2 during the regular season on its way to the conference title for the ninth time in 13 seasons. For the fifth time, the Jayhawks are the top seed in this event, which they have won three straight years. The Oklahoma Sooners at 13-3 and the 12-4 Missouri Tigers also earned byes in the opening round and are seeded second and third, respectively. Kansas State finished in a four-way tie for fourth place, but after the tie-breaker scenario was worked out, it was the Wildcats who earned the fourth seed and final bye into the quarterfinals.
Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State all finished 9-7 as well, with the Longhorns earning the fifth-seed, the Aggies the sixth and the Cowboys the seventh. Nebraska ended a level 8-8 within the conference and was awarded the eighth-seed and the Cornhuskers will be pitted against ninth-seeded Baylor in the opening around. Iowa State landed the 10th spot with a 4-12 showing, and Texas Tech claimed the 11th seed with its 3-13 record. With just one win in 16 conference games, Colorado rounds out the field at the 12th spot.
The Big 12 Tournament gets started on Wednesday at the Ford Center, with ninth-seeded Baylor hooking up with eighth-seeded Nebraska. Coming off a record setting campaign in 2007-08, the Bears were expected to actually be contenders for the Big 12 title and were even ranked in the Top 25 in the early part of this season. The pressure though, got to Baylor, which dropped 10 its final 12 games to finish just 5-11 in the standings. The Bears haven't had much success in this tourney either, going just 5-11 all-time. As for Nebraska, it finished .500 in league play for the first time since 1998-99 and its eight Big 12 wins are for the third most in school history. Much like Baylor however, the Huskers have yet to win a title in this tourney and own a less than impressive 5-12 ledger.
In what should be the most lopsided affair in the opening round, the 12th- seeded Buffaloes challenge the fifth-seeded Longhorns. The Buffaloes carry an 11-game losing skid into the postseason, as they landed the last seed for the second year in a row. Colorado has gone 7-11 all-time in this tourney and that includes a 1-2 mark against Texas. Speaking of the Longhorns, they reached the 20-win plateau for the 10th consecutive season, but weren't much of a threat for the league title as many expected. As a matter of fact, Texas is playing a first round game for the first time since 2005 because of its loss to Kansas in the regular season finale. Despite a 15-12 mark in this tourney, the Horns have surprisingly never won the title, although they have made three straight and four championship game appearances in the last five years.
The seventh-seeded Cowboys will try to continue their hot play down the stretch against 10th-seeded Iowa State in the opening round. OSU captured victories in seven of its last 10 games to reach the 20-win mark for the 15th time in its past 19 campaigns. The Cowboys won back-to-back tourney tiles in 2004-05 and are 16-10 all-time in this event, including 2-1 versus the Cyclones. For the second straight season, ISU finished 4-12 in the conference and the program is in the hunt for its first title since 2000.
The opening round wraps up when 11th-seeded Texas Tech clashes with sixth- seeded Texas A&M. The Red Raiders went a disappointing 3-13 in conference play during the regular season, although they did knock off Kansas (84-65) in convincing fashion just last week. That was the team's lone win in its past eight outings. Texas Tech, which is 10-12 in this tourney, has never won the title before, but it did reach the finals in 2005. As for the Aggies, they ripped off six straight wins to close out the regular season with 23 overall victories and that is going to be hard to ignore for an at-large bid to the Big Dance. Texas A&M has gone a level 3-3 in this tourney over the past three years after failing to win a single game in its first nine showings.
The top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks await the winner of the Baylor/Nebraska matchup in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Kansas has won at least a share of the last five regular season crowns and has posted a minimum of 13 league victories in each of past four campaigns. As a matter of fact, the Jayhawks have won at least 11 games since the inception of the Big 12 back in 1996-97, solidify their dominance over this conference. Kansas has won a record six championships in this event, including the last three, and are 25-6 all-time in the tourney.
The second quarterfinal round bout will pair fourth-seeded Kansas State against either Colorado or Texas. The Wildcats opened league play 0-4 before rallying with wins in nine of their final 12 conference bouts. With the strong finish and the tie-breaker scenario, Kansas State earned an opening round bye for the third consecutive season. The Wildcats are 7-11 all-time in this tourney, but have yet to even advance to the title game.
The second-seed Oklahoma Sooners will begin their title quest against the winner of the Iowa State/Oklahoma State duel. The Sooners matched a school record by winning 13 Big 12 games and their 27 overall wins are the most since going 27-7 in 2003. Oklahoma is paced by Blake Griffin, the Big 12 Player of the Year and possible No.1 pick in the NBA draft. Griffin leads the Big 12 in scoring (22.1 ppg) and the nation in rebounding (14.2 rpg) and has recorded a school-record 25 double-doubles. He will now try to lead the Sooners to their fourth tourney title and first since 2003.
The final games on Thursday features the third-seeded Missouri Tigers against the survivor of the Texas Tech/Texas A&M tussle. The Tigers earned a top four seed for the first time since 1999, and their 25 overall wins are the second highest regular season total in program history. Missouri, which finished a perfect 18-0 at home, is an even 12-12 all-time in this event, but has yet to take home the hardware.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

Chiefs' Treen Green out for Sunday's game
How long Trent Green will remain sidelined is unknown. Coach Herm Edwards said Monday he will miss a second straight start Sunday when the Chiefs host the San Francisco 49ers.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Green was going into a feet-first hook slide when he was knocked unconscious by a thunderous, head-snapping hit from Cincinnati's Robert Geathers.
Oddsmakers at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com currently have the Chiefs listed as 7-point favorites versus the 49ers.
The 49ers got beat by Philadelphia 38-24 as a 6.5-point underdog last week. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (42.5).
Alex Smith completed 27-of-46 passes for 293 yards with a touchdown. Michael Robinson rushed for 29 yards and a pair of touchdowns on five carries.
The Chiefs lost 9-6 to Denver last week as an 11-point underdog. The combined score was well UNDER the posted over/under total (38).
Larry Johnson rushed for 126 yards on 27 carries. Damon Huard completed 17-of-23 passes for 133 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
