Around College Basketball: Dunphy settles in at Temple

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/15/2009 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - As a native of the Philadelphia, and after spending 17 seasons as the coach at Penn, Fran Dunphy knows every inch of the majestic Palestra - Philadelphia's shrine to college basketball.

So there has to be something at least a little unsettling when Dunphy comes back to coach for visiting Temple, from using the visiting locker room to sitting on the visitor's bench.

Dunphy returned again on Wednesday night to play Penn at the Palestra for the second time, with his 2007 visit still fresh in his memory banks. But this game between Temple and Penn was played without the circus atmosphere of his first return.

Penn ended up pulling that one out, 76-74, before 6,103 raucous fans at the Palestra, and Dunphy was determined to have his team more focused this time.

"It's much, much different, the fanfare," Dunphy said following Temple's surprisingly easy 78-53 victory. "I knew it was coming (in 2007). It was a crazy night."

Though Dunphy was his same, old, high-strung self on the sidelines, everything around him was more relaxed, including the crowd of 4,261 fans.

"It's just (the passage of) time. Time marches on. Now I've been here a couple of times. It's not novel anymore."

It didn't hurt on Wednesday that Dionte Christmas and company roared out of the gate with a 7-0 start. The struggling Penn Quakers, who fell to 3-8 on the season, didn't help their own cause by committing turnovers on three possessions and taking two-and-a-half minutes to even get off its first shot.

Eight minutes into the game, Ryan Brooks nailed a three-pointer to give Temple a 25-7 lead and the game was basically over. With the smooth senior guard Christmas contributing 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting and nine rebounds, while forward Craig Williams adjusted to his new role as a starter with a career- high 17 points, the Owls led by as many as 30 points before Dunphy cleared his bench.

The victory left Dunphy feeling upbeat about his current team.

Temple may be just 9-6 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, but Dunphy has always had a way of bringing his teams along as a season progresses and this edition of the Owls should be one to keep an eye on as the A-10 campaign unfolds.

But Dunphy could put that all away as he enjoyed another victory at the Palestra on Wednesday night.

"It's always great to come back to the Palestra," said Dunphy. "Penn was real good to me in my time here."

MySportsbook.com refunds all bets on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay from NFL week one.

(September 14) – Week one of NFL action saw three teams go scoreless for the first time since 1977.  Another four were unable to get a touchdown and almost half of the underdogs covered the spread. Those three teams saved bettors at MySportsbook.com from losing out completely, thanks to the company’s unique NFL Shutout Rule -- which ensures that if the team you backed goes scoreless, your wager is refunded.

Sportsbook refunded tens of thousands of dollars to customers who bet on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay, the three teams that stunk up the field so badly that their fans and backers never had a chance to get up from their couches and cheer.  In the spirit of the low scoring start to the season, odds makers at the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino have set odds on how many total shutouts there will be this season.

MySportsbook.com has posted updated sports betting lines for week two of the season.  Ben Roethlisberger’s health status is still questionable, so Willie Parker will try to lead Pittsburgh again as they travel to Jacksonville as a one point favorite.  After beating up on his little brother last week, Peyton Manning will look to lead the Colts to victory against Houston. Indianapolis is a whopping 13.5 favorite in the match-up.

Seattle, last year’s highest scoring team, showed the power of their defense with their gritty 9-6 win in Motown over the ravenous Lions.  They take their act back home to the comforts of Qwest Field where they will face the resurgent Arizona Cardinals.  The Seahawks are favored by a touchdown.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
