Dirk Nowitzki had 36 points and seven rebounds for the Mavericks, while Howard chipped in 28 points and 11 boards. The duo combined for just three points in the fourth quarter.

Carlisle took over in the offseason after Avery Johnson was fired, this despite the Mavericks reaching the playoffs eight straight years. They have lost in the first round in each of the last two seasons.

Jason Terry scored 15 for Dallas, which also received seven points, seven rebounds and 12 assists from Jason Kidd.
